I am planning on installing WindowsXP Pro Upgrade over
Windows98 on my Compaq 7935 computer which has a 550 MHz
AMD athlon Processor, 128MB DRAM with 30 GB hard drive. I
checked the Microsoft WindowsXP Upgrade Advisor which
suggested I disable or uninstall McAfee Virus Scan program
before Setup. I assume Windows XP will have a similar or
improved VirusScan program so I am planning on
uninstalling McAfee. Is this a good plan? Also are there
any other steps I should take before installing WindowsXP?

Hi Neil,

For what it is worth.

128MB is just enough. You can use it but may want to plan on increasing to
256 or higher in the near future.

30 gig hd is good. You may want to partition it into 2 or 3 dirves. 8 to 10
gigs for windows and the balance for data and backup. Think about it. This
can be done during the install. However if you choose this rout it will not
save your existing data. If you can backup your data and reinstall after the
change XP will most likely run much smoother.

Windows does not have a virus program. Check with the upgrade advisor or
McAfee if your version will work with XP.

Also you will need a Popup Stopper and a good firewall. Several are
available free and not so free. A little research before the change and a
download will save a lot of grief.

Good luck
Richard
