hey

i have tried to install win xp over win 98 but it doesn't
finish. any suggestions what to do?

my pc is athlon 1300 mhz and it has over 500 ram, i have 2
hard drives, one is 19 and the other is 100.

thank you,
frank

Make sure that there are no conflicts in your W98(SE?) installation; i.e.,
that W98 is patched up to date, that you have the latest drivers, AV
disabled, chkdsk /f done, all file fragments cleaned etc.
Also, see if XP does not require 98SE - it's not clear what build of 98 you
are running.

Anyway, there are few reasons (saving documents?) to "upgrade" 98 to XP.
Clean install is the way to go - but you need a valid CD/Floppy with MS OS
98 and up for the XP Upgrade version.

sorry... what does this "but you need a valid CD/Floppy
with MS OS 98 and up for the XP Upgrade version." mean?
my version of 98 is 4.10.1998.

you recommend formatting windows 98 and then installing
win xp?

thanks,
frank

You do NOT have to install Win98 first. Just make sure that your system is
set to boot from CD, Boot from the WinXP CD, and when it asks for a
qualifying previous version of Windows, just put the Win98 CD in. It will
verify the CD, and then you can put the WinXP CD back in and continue the
installation.

hi...

ok so i should format 98? and install win xp on clean
hard drive?? are you saying i need a win 98 boot disk plus
the win xp cd to install?

thanks,
frank

Just put the WinXp CD in and let it format the drive (NTFS is preferred over
the FAT that Win98 would format). Once WinXP finishes formatting the drive
and asks for proof of previous version of Windows, put in the Win98 CD.
WinXP will verify, prompt you to put the WInXP CD back in, and voila...

It really is very simple. Let the WinXP CD do everything (format, etc).
You will only need the Win98 CD as proof. You will NOT need to format or
install anything form the Win98 CD.

thanks for all the help... here goes.

Greetings --

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and *hard drives*) that will
still support Win9x.

I mean, if you do a clean XP install, if your XP version is "Upgrade," at a
time during the installation, XP will ask you to insert a CD with a valid
Microsoft OS eligible for upgrade. I am not sure if Win98 is eligible -
might be Win98SE and later.
My only concern was that you might have lost the Win98 CD and thus might be
unable to do a clean install of XP - well, there are ways around it, a Win98
boot up floppy w/ some extra files - io.sys, I guess. It's a long time since
W98, sorry for being uncertain.
