reformatting?(on clean reformatted drive)

thanks.

It is very straight forward. Simply follow the prompts on screen and you
will have a clean install.

Be sure to download all updates and install one you are down putting in the
OS.

There is no need to first reformat the drive. The Windows XP Installation
will do it for you, if a format what you want.

Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if necessary to
accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean installation (delete the
existing partition by pressing "D" when prompted, then create a new one).

You can find detailed instructions here:
http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

or here http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm

or here http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm

However I reommend an upgrade installation, rather a format and clean
installation. Unlike with previous versions of Windows, an upgrade to XP
replaces almost everything, and usually works very well.

My recommendation is to at least try the upgrade, since it's much easier
than a clean installation. You can always change your mind and reinstall
cleanly if problems develop.

However, don't assume that doing an upgrade relieves you of the need to
backup your data, etc. before beginning. Before starting to upgrade, it's
always prudent to recognize that things like a sudden power loss can occur
in the middle of it and cause the loss of everything. For that reason you
should make sure you have backups and anything else you need to reinstall if
the worst happens.

There is a tool on the MS site that will check your machine and point out
any problems/ unsupported devices etc. Why not run that to see if you might
have problems?
And why not just upgrade?
Anyhow:

The Windows XP CD is bootable, and *is* your boot disk. In addition to
Plato's links above, here are others I recommend:

To be more specific: I wish select clean install. Need I first reformat
my harddrive to prepare for Windows installation? Or I can just insert
CD in CDROM and windows will do formatting automatically? What s
better?

Then, about a partition: I have 20GB hardrive size. Should I select
just to create one partition that fills the entire dive? Or there is a
sence create multiple partitions?

Thank you.

If you will go to some of the sites you were already given, All Will Be
Revealed. Carey Frisch answered your first post with the following
link, which I like also recommend:

No.

Yes. Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if
necessary to accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean
installation (delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when prompted,

Let Windows do it. There's no advantage to doing it first externally, and
there's the disadvantage that NTFS won't be available to you if you do it
externally.

Then, about a partition: I have 20GB hardrive size. Should I select
just to create one partition that fills the entire dive? Or there is a

With such a small drive, I would have just a single partition.

Still amplfication:
Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if
necessary to accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean
installation (delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when
prompted,
then create a new one).

If required, how to change the BIOS boot order if necessary to
accomplish this? This will be prompted when boot from the Windows XP
CD?

Thanks.

You need to boot into the BIOS to change it. Change it back when the
installation's done.

No. How to get into your BIOS depends, not on Windows, but on what
motherboard/BIOS you have. As a matter of fact, you have to access the BIOS
before Windows even starts to boot. One common way is to press the Del key
when you first power on, but that's not necessarily right for your computer.
Watch the screen carefully when you first boot; there's often a message
there telling you what to do. If not, check your system documentation or
check with your vendor.

Also look here: http://michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm Or just
try the Del key. There's a good chance that's correct for you.
