I'm trying to install Windows XP on my Sony Vaio as a
clean install but I am unable to read the screen. I did
an upgrade from Win2k to XP and that was fine but I want
to format the partition and start over with a clean
install. I'm using the 6 boot floppies rather than
booting off the CD so it won't copy the setup files to
the hard drive. You see, if it copies the setup files to
the hard drive you cannot format the partition (it
doesn't let you). So when I use the floppies it gets all
the way through floppy #6 then I get a screen that I
can't read. There are some lines and it is prompting me
to do something. If I hit enter it continues but beyond
that I don't know what to do because I can't read
anything. I have flashed my bios with the latest XP
compatible software from Sony thinking that may help but
no luck.

Please help!

A clean install on a laptop is risky at best. XP does not
have the necessary propriety drivers for your laptop. The
display is one of them the touch pad is another, the modem.

Use your restore disks then do a upgrade with XP.

There are instructions on Sony's Support web site to upgrade from Windows XP
Home Edition to Windows XP Professional (OEM or Retail) and how to install
the required motherbord, video, etc. drivers. I have a Sony PCV-RZ34G and
there are instructions available to upgrade from Windows XP Home Edition to
Windows XP Professional. I have not done this yet as I am hesitant on on
upgrading to XP Professional due to not experiencing any problems (crashes,
lock ups, etc.):
