I just purchased a CompUSA brand USB 2.0 card for my
laptop which only has USB 1.0 on it. The card seemed to
install fine and looks to be recognized correctly in
device manager. The problems start when I hook up a USB
2.0 external hard drive to the card. The drive is
recognized as a drive, but the formatting seems to have
dissapeared. The same device is recognized fine (with the
using a 2.0 device on a 1.0 error) on the USB 1.0 port or
through my firewire port. It is also seen correctly on a
2.0 port on another machine. What should I look for to
try to fix this problem?

Thanks

Dennis

SP1 is installed. I was previously getting a Code 10 error on the external drive. I just did a system restore to wednsday, the day before I installed the card. The card is recognized and I'm sure I have the XP drivers (and not the ALI drivers) installed. However now I get a message that there was an error installing the device and it might not be usable when I hook up the hard drive to the USB 2.0 card. It still works fine in the USB 1.0 ports on the computer.

I'm still looking for a solution to this problem before bringing the card back to compuseless.

Reinstall SP1 or at least the USB 2.0 drivers.

OK, I tried this but I'm still getting the same error message when I hook up external drives to the USB. 2.0 card

Thanks for everyones help. I exchanged the card at Compuseless and the new one works just fine. The new one was actually an older version (it came with drivers on a 3.5" floppy instead of a cd) that used an NEC chipset. The problem card used an ALI chipset.
