Somewhere I read that if you have an OEM version of XP you can't then
install service pack 1. Is that true?

Is there some problem with the two that I should be aware of before I
insall and OEM version that I purchased with a new hd???

This is completely untrue.

If you had a pirated version of Windows XP you may have had trouble
installing service packs. Your OEM installation will be fine.

Remember to turn on the Internet Connection Firewall before you go online
and then hook yourself up to Windows Update to get all the updates. If you
have SP1 on CD, then install this first so you don't end up downloading it
again via Windows Update.

Regards

Oli

Not at all true. Only illegal, pirated versions of Windows XP
cannot install SP1. Chances are your OEM version already
has SP1 integrated.....check the CD for a notation.

I would suggest getting a "good" firewall before going on line. The windows firewall will not stop you from the blaster worm!

If I go online wihthout being patched up it still only takes me less then 2 mins to become infected!

Thanks. I looked and sp1 is included.

Thanks. I'm using a router.

Although I am all for "good" firewalls, I find your statement that "the
windows firewall will not stop you from the blaster worm" to be completely
untrue. If it is turned on before you get on the internet the first time,
then you should be fine.

I second that. The built-in firewall is effective against Blaster and
similar worms. All it's really lacking as of the current release is
outbound filtering.

Colic, you might be confused in that the built-in firewall is turned off by
default in Gold and SP1. Once turned on, though, it gives protection
against Blaster-type worms.

Similarly, Blacksmith, the NAT router you have protects you against Blaster
infection from outside (as long as you haven't configured port redirection
for the affected ports), but it's still best to patch anyway.
