Several years ago I bought Windows XP Pro. I am now trying to install it on
a new computer that has XP Home installed on it. When I start the
installation program, the system tells me that I cannot proceed because the
XP Home on the new computer is newer than the XP Pro that I am trying to
install.

I would be most grateful if anyone can offer insight into how I can get
around this.

You have sp2 installed on the xp home computer. You can try uninstalling sp2
then use the pro disc to update then reinstall sp2 and all other updates. I
dont know if that will as there will be other updates as well. The other way
is to make a slipstream disc where you add the sp2 updates to the windows xp
pro disc then use that to upgrade. I would use the slipstream method myself
as it gives you the windows XP pro sp2 disc for future use.

Slipstream sp2

Google "slipstream sp2" for many more sites.

Many thanks for the suggestion, Glen. I will try uninstalling sp2 first, as
that appears to be more straightforward than the slipstream method.

Glad to have helped.

If the computer is new and you didn't apply SP 2, you won't be able to
uninstall SP 2. SP 2 is part of the OS and cannot be uninstalled. You will
need to slipstream SP 2 into your XP Pro.

If the HD is > 137G, and the XP you want to install is pre-SP1, then
you CANNOT safely install that XP until you have slipstreamed SP2 into
it. This is due to varying levels of support for > 137G...

XP Original - doesn't support > 137G at all, is useless and unsafe in
such contexts. Do not use; you cannot install this and later update
the installation to SP1 or SP2 because the install will barf it up!!

XP SP1 - imperfect support for > 137G, i.e. most of the time you'd be
safe, but some contexts (e.g.writing a crash dump) could trash the
contents of the hard drive. You can install SP1, but should upgrade
to SP2 afterwards. If you have to slipstream an SP, make it SP2.

XP SP2 - proper support for >137G. It's strongly recommended to
slipstream this into your OS installation set if HD is (or may in
future be) > 137G, and mandatory if OS is XP Original.
