I bought Office 2003 for my work computer and installed Word. I also work
from home on my laptop. I tried to install Word but now the laptop software
doesn't work. It seems, after a lot of work that I can only open the program
in safe mode and I can't retrieve any saved documents or write a new letter.
Am I allowed to install the cd on 2 computers? Any help will be appreciated.

Did you activate Office 2003 on the laptop? (Help | Activate Product)

First, thanks for responding to my query. I did go to Help and it said that
the program was already activated. When I installed the software on the
desktop chances are I activated the program then.

I'm confused. You installed the program on the desktop and activated it.
Then you installed it on the laptop (you did install it, right--not just
copy files?); how can the laptop know it's been activated on the desktop? It
must be separately activated for the laptop because the hardware is
different. If this is a retail version (as you indicate), then it is
licensed for one desktop and one laptop. OEM versions are licensed only for
the machine they come on.

For more information, see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=293151 and

Yes, it's a retail version

The referenced article (although it is for Office XP) suggests a different
activation path, but likely it wouldn't work, either, even if available. I'm
guessing that you *did* activate this copy when you installed it on the
laptop. Are you getting a message that the documents are "locked for edit"?
That would indicate an activation problem. Otherwise, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm for more options.

No, I don't get any messages at all. The Microsoft Office page opens in the
middle of the screen and that's it. If I go to Programs>Microsoft
Office>Microsoft Office Tools>Application Recovery and click end application
I can get the program to open in safe mode. At this point I can't open any
saved documents.

I will look at the link posted and see if anything helps.

Thanks again.

I tried the run>winword fix. Word opened right away. Then I tried to open a
document and on the lower left corner it said running virus scan...and
nothing happened. I have Norton on the laptop.

Any ideas?

Disable the Norton Office Plug-in. It causes many problems and adds nothing
to security.

The procedure may vary slightly in the current version of NAV, but in
general, it's something like this:

1. Open Norton AntiVirus (right-click on the Systray icon and choose this
option).

2. Click on the Options button at the top of the dialog.

3. In the Options dialog, click on Miscellaneous (menu on the left)

4. Clear the check box for "Enable Office Plug-in."

5. OK out and close NAV.

When I open the Options at the top, my only choices are: Norton Protection
Center and Norton AntiVirus. I went through everything and can't find
anything that says Miscellaneous or Office Plug-in.

With some versions of the Norton product it may be necessary to unregister
the calling DLL by running the following command line from Windows > Start >
Run

Locate the file then unregister it e.g.

regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton antivirus\officeav.dll"
or
regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton systemworks\norton
antivirus\officeav.dll"

Select Norton AntiVirus. In the dialog that this opens, there is (in my
version) a bar on the left with options for System, Internet, and Other.
Miscellaneous is under Other.

You missed the sentence that said 'locate the file'! These were merely
examples used in some versions of NAV. Use Windows Explorer to search for
the file and if found, substitute the path.

Hi L,

Norton Antivirus 2007 has a different options display from prior versions. There are a couple of ways to get to the 'Miscellaneous'
settings to turn off the Office Plug-in. Here's one:

1. In the Windows System tray click on the Norton 2007 Protection Center status icon and switch to the 'Norton Antivirus' tab.

2. In Norton Antivirus 2007,

a. Scroll down below the 'Email and Messaging'
choice to 'Additional Options'

b. Select the 'Virus andSpyware Protection Options'.

3. When that dialog comes up choose from the 'Advanced Options' settings, the 'Miscellaneous category will be a link on the left
side of the screen. Choose that option.

4. Once in the 'Miscellaneous' dialog uncheck the choice for the Office Plug-in, that is named, in this version:

[x] Turn on scanning for Microsoft Office documents'

=================
When I open the Options at the top, my only choices are: Norton Protection
Center and Norton AntiVirus. I went through everything and can't find
anything that says Miscellaneous or Office Plug-in. >>
