I'm new to this PC lark so I might be being really thick
here...

I downloaded Windows Messenger several days ago. However,
I've never been able to use it because of the following:
every time I turn my laptop on a Windows Messenger box
appears telling me that a newer version of Windows
Messenger is available and I must install the newer
version in order to continue. I hit on the yes box to say
I'd like to do it now. Another window then pops up saying
I have to close all programs before continuing with
installation. As far as I know there aren't any other
programs running - I've only just turned the laptop on! I
click ok, but yet another box pops up basically saying
the same thing as the last one but also telling me to
look at the bottom of my screen to make sure none of the
following are running: Internet Explorer, MSN Explorer,
Outlook Express, Outlook. They aren't! The Task Manager
tells me the only application running is Windows
Messenger. It doesn't matter how many times I click ok,
the box won't go away and I have to click cancel to make
it disappear. Result - can't sign in to Windows
Messenger. Help! If it matters, I'm using Windows XP and
I've got BT Broadband where the router is connected to
ADSL.

When you get the popup - go down to the litle messenger
icon in your sytem tray and right click and choose "exit"

It is pretty silly that messenger doesn't close itself
for the update - but thats probably what you're seeing.

An alternative is to simply choose "NO" on the update.

If you are dead set on updating it - exit out of
messenger go to
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/windowsmessenger/ and
download it to your harddisk manually and run the update.
(with messenger exited.)
