I am running Windows XP (Home edition) with a P3 600 Mhz
processor and would like to upgrade my system with a new
motherboard and fast P4 processor. However I hate the
thought of reinstalling the large number of applications
programs and multiple updates on my hard drive. I've asked
technicians in several stores and gotten contradictory
info. One says just boot up from the Windows XP CD and use
the Repair mode. Another says it won't work and that I
must reinstall everything.

I would appreciate knowing of any experience doing this
and any suggestions.

Thank you

Please be aware you will also require new RAM. A P4 motherboard uses
different RAM to a P3. You may (depending on its age) also require a new
graphics card.

You may be able to get away with a repair installation (almost certainly)
but, if that fails, then you may be forced to wipe clean. Best to back up
anything important before making any changes.
