installing western digital hard drive..keep getting
command or filename not recognixed and/or x prompt

-----Original Message-----

Tell a complete story.

Sorry, I have installed my new western digital 160GB hard
drive. I insert the disk that came with it and start the
PC to install the drivers(?) and DOS reads...
command or file not recognized
X:/>_

I do not know what this means. I assumed it would be as
simple as the instructions said it would be. (never
assume, huh?)
I was running Windows XP on an Emachines T2260 w/seagate
60GB hard drive and I could not get passed the Welcome
screen, I learned that my hard drive was corrupt when
windows quit loading all together. It just froze at the
splash screen. I bought a new hard drive last night and
am trying to install it today. I have w/me a Win XP OEM
disk, emachines system recovery CD.
Thanks,
Cora

Don't use anything that came with the HD.

You got lucky.

Physically install the new HD as primary master. Leave the old HD out for
now. Boot from the XP CD and install XP.
