If you have a legal key, you do not need to re-install Windows XP
again. You can simply change the product key by following the
simple steps outlined here:
How can I change the volume licensing product key on a Windows XP
SP1-Based Computer?
http://www.petri.co.il/change_the_serial_in_windows_xp.htm

I may have overlooked it on the page... but:

The Genuine Advantage Product Key Update Tool is only valid for
users attempting to change their current non-genuine Product Key
to a genuine COA sticker or genuine Product Key - all without a reinstall!

Ummm...Isnt that what the OP is trying to do ?

Yes. Which is why I added it to the web page you sent them to.
At least one of the tips on the web page you sent had them changing one
volume license key to another volume license key.
I don't think that matters with the Microsoft utility.

In other words - as I stated - I did not see the Microsoft Utility to change
the key on the web page link you gave - so I was adding to your fine answer
for another option for the OP.

Keys don't change from SP1 to SP2, SP's are service packs, which are free
updates to Windows.
Why do you think you have an illegal copy?
