Installing I.E. 7

Having tried many times, along with hours on the telephone, it seems clear I
have two problems:
1. Help & Support is gone from my computer
2. When I try to run Config, I am told there is none

I have also attempted to re-install XP Pro but that produces a message that
what I have installed is newer than what's on the disc.

Short of re-formatting the disk, any suggestions?

*** What command are you running and from where? Did you mean msconfig?

*** You'll need to use integrated installation media.

1) Look at #57, left side: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
And/or...
http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/how_do_i_reinstall_the_windows.htm

2) I am unsure what you mean.
Start button --> RUN --> config --> OK for me brings up
'C:\WINDOWS\system32\config'
Do you mean msconfig?

As for the 'what I have installed is newer than what's on the disc' -->
probably true. Your CD is likely SP1 or RTM - and your installed OS is
probably SP2. The only way to do a real install with that CD on that system
is a CLEAN install - where you boot to the CD, erase the old partition(s),
create new partition(s) and reinstall from scratch. Everything GONE.
However - if you look into slipstreaming (integrating) SP2 into your
installation CD - you can use it to perform a repair installation on your
SP2 installed system - as well as gain other benefits with the more up to
date CD.

I am hopeful. Will post whether it works or not.

Firstly, what does your post have to do with installing IE7? If you have an
IE 7 question direct it to the internet explorer newsgroup.

Newsreader:

On the Web:
http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...?dg=microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general

For the Help and Support issue what happens when you try to run it? Is it
not listed from Start? Right click the Start button, Properties, Start
menu, Customize. Make sure there is a check mark for help.

If that doesn't do it then see this link:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/top10faqs.htm
Why doesn't Help and Support work?

For the reinstallation of XP that message comes up because the service pack
level for the installed OS is greater than that on the installation CD. To
get around this the best option is to create an installation CD with the
current service pack level slipstreamed into it. Here are some links for
how to do this. Autostreamer makes it relatively easy.
