I have also posted this question to the directx newsgroup:-

When I try to install DirectX 9.0 I get error message "The software you are
installing has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility
with Windows XP. This software will not be installed." I click OK and
another message greets me "Directx did not copy a required file."

I have tried to install the software as part of Windows Update and also
direct from the Microsoft web site.

Please help.

I would suggest you download a Direct-X uninstaller. While not
supported by Microsoft, it will allow you to revert to the original
version on your install CD.

Afterwards, download the complete Direct-X 9B stand-alone
module and load Direct X that way.

(Large download, 35 Megabytes)

Before starting this type of process make sure you have a Image
backup of your PC.

A Google for Direct X Uninstall will give you a number of choices
for removing your current components.

Thanks for this. your suggestion was very helpful. I did what you
suggested and managed to install directx 9.

Thanks again
