i live in brazil and bought an XP version in portuguese.
i have since received an english version - XP
professional version - through a study program. how do i
go about installing it? is it not a matter of
uninstalling the previous version, and is that difficult,
or does it involve repartitioning, and how is that done?

Kevin;
Since they are different languages, you can not install one over the
other and retain data and settings.
You will need to perform a Clean Installation of Windows XP English.
If you have a partition with available space, you can install XP
English there.
Otherwise the Clean installation will destroy all data:

Greetings --

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
