I just tried to install avast! (the free version).
I was asked to provide the 'Default SMTP Server' and the 'Default POP3
Server'.
I am not exactly sure what they want here and rather than make a mistake, is
there somewhere on my computer I can go to obtain this info?

Those would be the server names as listed in your email client, so Avast
can scan your mail for viruses.

BTW, scanning incoming and outgoing mail is largely useless (especially
outgoing), as the a-v program will intercept any virus program you
attempt to execute. Besides, virus-laden email is very recognizable, so
you should just delete it upon receipt.

Didn't think the new avast! needed that. It has transparent e-mail and
news scanning (if you use the standard ports). Only Win98 needs the
old style (where you set avast! as new mail server to scan).

Since Lou said "I was asked to provide.." maybe he is using Win98? (I
use Win2K and don't remember - a few years ago - if Avast asked me for
server names...).

Lou, what OS are you using?

It did - a few years ago :-) The transparent mail scanner is quite
new, but works very well (same for the equal transparent web scanner)

When I tried the free version of Avast on my Win98SE system, it also asked for
those same settings.
However, there was a pulldown box right there that already had the proper
settings in it.
Check it out.
