John,

At this step:

"the next will ask if you want a primary or extended partition (choose
<what you want)"

You want to select 'Primary'. Any partitions added to this new drive will
then be 'Extended'.

I am having trouble installing a second hard drive. The hardware is in place
and connected. The POST screen recognizes 2 discs. Windows detects new
hardware and installs it successfully. Device manager shows both drives. But
the new drive is not given a identifying letter and does not appear in My
Computer and therefore cannot be accessed. Can anyone help please?

I think you need to Format it to FAT32 or NTFS in order for Windows to
recognize your harddrive as a named one.

After installing your hard drive you need to go to computer managemente:
You need to do as administrador

Start - right click my computer - select manage - the computer manage
windows will open - look for disk managmente and click here...now you see
your two drives but the second is unallocated... right click the unallocated
space of the new drive and choose New Partition...The wizard opens - click
next - the next will ask if you want a primary or extended partition(choose
what you want) - next- now is asking what size? sellect full capacity - next
- the letter will be assigned - next - format partition choose NTF(here do
you selection) start formating and click finish when prompted

The new hard drive cannot appear in Windows Explorer or My
Computer, nor can disk management assign it a drive letter, until it has
been partitioned and formatted. Right-click My Computer > Manage > Disk
Management. Create and format partition(s) on the second hard drive as
desired.

Good idea here, but it does not work. I can only see one disc (c:\ disc 0)
in disc management, so cannot partition or format from here. However, in
Device manager you can see both. One other suggestion that has come up is to
boot from the XP installation CD, which should give the option to format
drives.....
