I have Pentium 4 3.06 mhz cpu with 512 meg of ram.(trying
to use 1 gig).
I bought a pair of unbuffered non ecc ram 512 meg ea.
as my motherboard manual said to use. When I boot
everything is ok until Windows XP Home loads. It will hang
completely or load and a few seconds later it will just
reboot all by itself. BIOS recognizes the 1 gig but just
can't get windows to work. I used just 1 stick (512) and
everything is fine. Is there something in windows I need
to do to have 1 gig of ram installed on my computer?

Please help,
Leonard

Even if the RAM is labeled as being identical, it might be
different and when installed as a pair, they don't match.

It's not a Windows issue. Either one of the sticks is bad or they are
mismatched, in other words they are different types of memory. Try
alternating the sticks, in other words, if it works with one of the sticks,
pull the good stick and insert the other one and see if it works. If no,
you have a bad stick, if yes, it might be the sticks are mismatched or you
may need to change a setting in the system BIOS.

First try each of the 512Mb sticks independantly to see if they work
correctly and preferably test them thoroughly with memtest
(www.memtest86.com), if that works all ok then it is either a problem with
two sticks that have timing issues with eachother (note that although it is
best to always have identical sticks, but that this is absolutely not a
necessity for it to work), or your motherboard might have issues with 2x512
setups, I know that some of the latest boards have known and acknowledged
problems with this.
