Hi,

Had occasion to repair by pc using the CD. All going well and then it says
it can't find circa. 75 files in \I386. Browsed and I could see them but not
recognised by pc. Tried copying them to desktop but still no joy. Now
Installer always running so can't install anything new and task manager also
missing!
Any ideas?

A re-installed was not what was needed in this case but too late now. You
can try this to eliminate the virus and we can go from there.

Sorry, picked up a virus and pc won't boot so went in through F2 and
booted
from the CD

Looking good, did the various bits, used one of your little routines to get
task manager back so was able to stop installer. Instalelr still seems
knackered as can't get SP 3 to install.

Any ideas?

Hi,

Just closed all apps down and then tried to install SP3. It fails
immediately. I accept the licenec terms and then it says failed.

Are you currently running WinXP SP1 or WinXP SP2?

Are you attempting to install SP3 via Windows Update or manually?

How to troubleshoot an unsuccessful installation of WinXP SP3
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950718

WinXP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation
http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldro...requisites-for-a-successful-installation.aspx

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and
e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada. Go to
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=1173 | select "Windows
XP" then select "Windows XP Service Pack 3"

Hi,

Currently on SP2 via windows update. I believe the current problems are
linked to a failed re-install of XP so whenever i start up I get a pop up
suggesting that the pc is trying to complet the re-install. The pop up is a
status box and says "the feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or
other removab;le daisk that is not available - Insert the status disk and
click okay"
I do that but then run into the problem that I can see the files it is
looking for but it can't in the I386 folder.

Will try the troubleshoot link you gave me.

Thanks,

Doug

Downloading SP3 manually and will see how that goes. Still have another 35
critical updates to do so would really like to fix the Installer
functionality.

In that case, I would NOT attempt to install WinXP SP3 yet.

Take the machine to a local, reputable and independent (i.e., not
BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.

Ok, one last thing you can do. See if you can copy the i386 folder from the
CD to the hard drive then tell the computer to finish the installation from
there. If you can copy the files from the CD then you are probably ok, if
not then your CD or CD drive may be bad. If so change them till you can get
a copy of the i386 folder onto your computer.
