OEM is an accronym for Origional Equipment Manufacturer.
Microsoft only gives free support to store bought versions.
Sounds like you require a clean install for which you
require a product key. Hope your husband has copies of his
applications and backups of his data files.
Prior to the overinstall, he may have been able to restore
his system if his registry was backed up prior to spyware
removal.

Good Luck,

Chet

Thanks, Chet. We do have a product key on the XP package, so we may be able
to do the clean install. However, after coming to understand more about what
the OEM is, I am inclined to chuck it and go get a retail version. However I
don't know whether installing that would make things worse.
Fortunately we do have the applications he needs and most of his files were
backed up. But I am afraid to re-install MS Office until I know where we
stand with the operating system.
