installed windows xp home upgrade

installed windows xp home on my laptop, however laptop now
won't start into windows. Can't start computer into safe
mode either. Been trying to get a product ID key, but
can't get far enough into windows to get to the start
button. All I get in a black screen with my cursor on it.
Pls, any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

HUH?!? You don't install software using the Product ID - how on earth could
you?! It isn't generated until the software is installed! PIK and PID are
*NOT* synonyms.
