installed vista again, but vista is 20-30% slower than xp

xp and vista are on seperate drives, both os are freshly istalled...since I
reinstalled xp a few days ago

and im not using non ms drivers.

AFAIK, no one has said Windows Vista will always be as fast as Windows
XP on the same hardware.
However some have reported better performance with Windows Vista.

Generally you will need more powerful hardware to get similar
performance.
This is not unique to windows XP.
It was the same when Windows XP came out compared to Windows 9x and
2000.

You may need a faster processor, more memory etc depending on specific
uses of your computer.

ram is 1.25 gb and cpu is 2600 mhz. single core...

its not great, but its not too bad either..

I have finetuned XP too making it faster than normal...and Im used to that
speed.

I try all the tricks I have learned over the years and apply them to vista..
but I cant get a lot more speed out of it.

Apart from services (that I have tweaked to disable those I dont need) , if
you have vista vanilla installed (no 3rd party programs at all), what else
can be making it go slower??

Dlls of vista itself? for example the shell? Or what?

I want to super-optimize it.. perhaps to make it usable.

What happens when you double the RAM.
1.25 GB is great for Windows XP but marginal depending on usage for
Windows Vista,

Then what do you expect?
You need 3rd party drivers to get good performance. The built-in drivers
are there to just get you up and running - Microsoft doesn't know the
intricate details of your hardware, like your hardware manufacturer does.

Alun Harford

It is burried in the back of the Vista documentation, but each time you
install Vista, it slows up by another 7-8%. So if you install 3 or 4 times,
you system will really slow down. I suggest you remove Vista, go get a copy
of Ubuntu, then your system will speed up. After you do that, you can go
over to the Ubuntu group and bother them.

Just FYI

"and im not using non ms drivers."
I misread this the first time because of the double negative.
Since few drivers are Microsoft, except those for Microsoft hardware,
it is difficult to know what you are using.

Do you mean you are using the native Vista drivers?
Those are developed by the 3rd parties owning the hardware and made
available after the 3rd party drivers have passed appropriate tests.

Instead go directly to the hardware manufacturer and get their latest
Windows Vista drivers.
If there are no drivers available, considering replacing the hardware
if maximum performance is desired.
With only vista native drivers, you may be taking a significant
performance hit since often newer and better drivers are available.

you can use neowin themeUI patch along with a vista msstyles theme for XP,
and make XP look like vista (without the glass effect though).
see screenshot of theme:

get the patcher here
http://uploads.neowin.net/download.php?file=post-1-1161291464.ipb&name=UXTheme_Multi_Patcher_4.0.zip

and the theme is here

http://frenchford.googlepages.com/MVRTM.RAR

you will need winrar to open the rar file (its like a zip) see here for
winrar:

Apart from services (that I have tweaked to disable those I dont need)

tweaking the system and disabling services could cause the system to become
slower.
