I installed SP2 on my machine. Before the installation my machine ran
perfect. After reboot I could not browse or check mail "server not found".
I know my modem and internet connection works because I used an alternate
machine (Pentium 350) to post my problem to this newsgroup. I turned off the
firewall (still did not work), called Earthlink (they had no answers but
verifed the internet connection was good), uninstalled SP2 (still did not
work), tried to restore my system to a previous date before the SP2
installation (would not restore for any available restore dates). I need
help to resolve this. I have not ruled out doing a complete reload but would
prefer to not go there. Thanks for any help in advance.

To repair all system files, go to Start/Run, and type: SFC /SCANNOW

also: Go to Start/Run, and type: REGSVR32 URLMON.DLL Then open IE, Tools
menu, Options, Program Tab, and click the "Reset Web Settings" button.

Mark,
I tried your suggestion but still no change. I was online with a tech
person last night and we came to the conclusion that XP is currently unable
to resolve DNS requests. We could access several sites by typing in their
numeric ip but when typing in www.whateverurl.com it could not resolve it.
We pinged many sites trying that. We reinstalled winsock, reset ips, flushed
the dns and nothing worked. When I check mail with Outlook it says it cannot
find the server. When I try to go to a webpage with IE it says page not
found. I have a suspicion that both of these are related to not being able
to resolve the DNS requests from both programs. I am not a techy type person
but understand enough to keep me in trouble. Any help would be appreciated.

Restart windows, after you go to start/run, and type CMD, then at that
prompt type:

IPCONFIG /flushDNS

and then :

IPCONFIG /registerDNS

Mark,
I talked my wife through this from my office phone and this also did not
work. After doing this and after re-booting the machine she was not able to
ping any www.whateversites.com nor would the IE be able to find a site ("page
not found"). I assume the status of the email remains the same ("server not
found"). Anything else that we can try? I think I mentioned that we did
install the upgrade on top of the original the other night, and that did not
work either. That was suggested by the techy guy the day before. What can
we try next?

This is no help, but I have the same problems. Page not found, server
not found. The Hotmail works, I downloaded incredimail, it didn't work,
I tried everything, went to Outlook Express, which I hadn't used before,
IT doesn't work. I can reply to an email in incredimail (don't know
about OE), but sending a composed mail doesn't work. It is very
frustrating. The only good thing about this is finding out it's not
just me having screwed something up. <G> Jean

Hi Jean,
I am assuming you installed XP SP2. If that is the case you did not screw
anything up, Microsoft is at fault here. All we did is download and install
a much touted/talked about upgrade which is supposed to be the best thing
since the invention of the automobile. I will admit that under conditions of
a clean install (newly loaded machine or reload) that it performs without a
glitch. At least on our machines at the office. We are at the mercy of
Microsoft and the wonderful people in these newsgroups to get us out of this.
Good Luck. In my Case, HELPPPPPPP.

It's not like SP2 isn't out there working on 100 million other machines. You
will have to define what is different about that one system. If it were mine
I would remove sp2 (from add-remove app), and run a Repair setup, then redo
the update to sp2.

Perform a Repair Installation:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

If you run an XP "Upgrade"setup, from the original, or "Gold" version of the
setup CD, and you have SP2 installed, it will go into a setup loop, and you
will lose your install. Uninstall SP2, BEFORE you do a Upgrade setup from CD
(that lacks sp2 on it.)

You are right. I have installed xp2. I have a friend who downloaded
incredimail before installing xp2, and it works just fine. My laptop
was brand new, and one of the first things that cropped up was the xp2
download, so I did. I'm going to follow Mark's advice and remove it and
see what happens. I couldn't even post to these microsoft groups from
my laptop. Got the same 'server can't be found' popup. Jean
