Installed SP2, now can't boot.

I have tried several times to get service pack 2 working on my XP
installation. Each time I fight with it for several hours and, making no
progress and needing to use my computer again, uninstall the damn thing. But
I'm to the point now where I need to install a new Visual Studio, which will
not install without SP2. It has installed fine, but locks when it hits the
log in screen. No mouse, no keyboard, must manually reboot. I can get into
safe mode fine. I have found no articles on MS's site which seem applicable.
I have checked my bios version, and drivers are up to date. I have had
issues with Spyware, but have scanned and removed prior to install. This is
an OEM version, which I hear has had additional issues. Any help appreciated.

If you can get into Safe Mode but not into Normal Mode then
something gets loaded in Normal Mode that is interfering with
the operation of Windows. Boot into Safe Mode, run msconfig.exe,
click the Startup tab then selectively disable your startup tasks
until you isolate the culprit.
