I have just reformatted my hard drive using the windows 98
2nd edition startup disk. When I want to install windows
XP home edition an error message appears " windows xp does
not support ms dos ". How do I get around this?

You boot the XP CD direct, setting the BIOS to boot CD before HD, and
carry on into the Setup. Enter New Install. When it asks where you can
either install to that FAT 32 partition, or (I Would) hit ESC and take
the opportunity to delete it and make a new RAW one, to be formatted
next stage. You can then either choose NTFS (see
www.aumha.org/win5/a/ntfs.htm for considerations) or FAT32
