After a great deal of frustration, i finally was able to
reinstall windows xp on my computer (which had crashed)
by using the cd's given to me when i bought the
computer. i had a great deal of difficulty in getting
the correct product key number to work. G's look like
6's. O's look like 0's. B's look like 8's. Well, you
get the idea. I finally got it to work and the
installation was completed. I got to the screen where it
asks you to put in the first name of all of the users and
i did and pressed next and sure enough, up came the
intial screen you get with windows xp. all of the user
names were there with the standard icons boxes. I
clicked on my name and it asked for a password. since
there is none yet, i just clicked on the arrow. but, i
now have another problem. I got the following:
"The system can't log you in due to the following error:
The specified domain either doesn't exist or could not be
contacted. Please try again (which I did) or contact the
system administrator." There is no system adminitrator.
It's just a standalone desktop. Please help!

I suspect that you may have been connected to the
network (?) and so bombarded by some malware.

There is an Administrator account, whether you see it
or not. In Home this can be used in a F8 safe mode boot
and will default to having a blank password.

You should disconnect the machine from network access,
reboot it, and attempt to obtain administrative login.
Then, install your antivirus program, turn on the firewall,
and then reconnect to the network in order to visit your
anti-virus vendor for updates and most importantly to visit
Windows Update to get the newly installed Windows XP
brought up-to-date.

If you have difficulties during this process similar to what
you have already seen, then you will need to add a step to
get a good cleaner tool from an anti-virus vendor to try to
undo what may have already happened to the system.
