Installation of XP Home freezes...

I am attempting to install XP home version on my
computer. It'll get to the point where it says copying
files, and I see the action at the bottom of the screen,
however it flashes then all I see is the message stating
that it is copying files to my hard disk, but nothing
else. Looks as though it has frozen, unless there is a
really long (45 minutes so far) part of the instal
process.

Any tips, ideas or whacks on the head would be welcome :)

Greetings --

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for and sold with Win9x/Me
very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent hardware quality
requirements. This is particularly true of many models in Compaq's
consumer-class Presario product line or HP's consumer-class Pavilion
product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K before it, is quite
sensitive to borderline defective hardware (particularly motherboards,
RAM and hard drives) that will still support Win9x.

OK it started copying files finally, but now I'm getting
errors, that files couldn't be copied. I've never done an
os instal so I'm clueless what I should be doing when I
encounter errors.

Thanks Bruce,

yes all the hardware meet requirements. I just built the
system with installing XP in mind :)

Problems copying files or corrupted files during installation are
most often caused by defective or sub-standard hardware; in order of
likelihood, either RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard. On much
less frequent occasions, a bad CD or defective CD drive can also cause
this.

Yea, sounds like the RAM to me.

If you have two sticks of RAM installed, try removing one, if its stil
doing it, remove the other, leaving the first. If its STILL doing it
borrow a stick from a mate. :) I have seen this a few times
especially in XP and it _almost_ always turns out to be bad ram
