Hiya Bernard,
There are several significant reasons to use imaging software..
1) Companies have a need to insure that all their workstations are
configured exactly the same way to reduce support costs, they could do this
via unattended installation purely, but it takes a long time to setup a
machine eg. 30 mins for XP pro on a fast machine. However, deploying an
imaged solution can be deployed in 10 mins or even less.
2) It is easier to refine an image on a localized network, configure it in a
safe "sandbox" and then deploy the images rather than configure each machine
and then deploy it, as there is a high probability that there will be
differences between each machine.
In summary, imaging is about resolving:
- Time to deploy
- Quality Maintenance
- Assurance of uniformity of deployed machines..
