I'm running windows XP pro upgrade (from windows xp home). It's on an HP 1.4 processor, 512 mb ram. Whenever I try to install or uninstall something, the installer gets stuck basically at the end and never finishes. For example, I've been trying to install windows xp service pack 1, and it has been sitting now for over 12 hours with both the download process and install process bars completed, but going no further as to finish installation. Also I tried to get support through the windows support, but when I came to the step that I had to get my product ID, when I ran the process that tells me what Microsoft products I have installed, it stopped and said 'generic failure'. I could not get support because windows will not allow me to get so far as to see my product ID even. I'm behind a router, as well a norton firewall and norton antivirus. But as soon as I had my computer, installing new products on it would linger for a long time at the end of the installation process. I can still install other products, but cannot get any updates for my windows xp pro to work at all.

You are turning off the anti-virus, aren't you, when installing? If not,
this may be your problem.
