I had a hard drive crash so I purchased a new hard drive (WD 80GB) and put it
in the computer. Then I went to install XP. It loaded a bunch of files then
said starting windows and did a lot of CD/HD stuff then the screen went blue
and the white text bar at the bottom went blank. Two little white lines
appeared at the top left and a second set below that but no text on the page.
I pressed enter and the machine did a few more things then the first page of
the eula loaded but no directions on continuing. I press F8 and the machine
continues but I get no instructions on proceeding. Any ideas on what this
problem is.

Sounds like a hardware conflict or video card problem.

Disconnect all peripherals not needed for basic computer operation --
keyboard, mouse, video card/monitor and maybe the network card (sometimes
this even means removing third-party add-in cards - sound cards, etc.).

In this way, you simplify the Windows install / configuration decisions.
Also, go to the Support / Download sites for ALL of your third party
hardware -- have the latest versions of drivers or installation software.
Some vendors have this prominently marked for WinXP or SP2 updates -- others
bury the information or are slow in updating legacy hardware drivers.

THanks, I found my problem and it is amazing that one small thing can mess up
so much. There was a small smudge of glue or something on the installation
CD. I got a different CD and installation went flawlessly.
