Installation Issue

Ken

I recently attempted an upgrade from Win 98se to XP Home.
Before I did the upgrade, I ran upgrade advisor and
removed/upgraded the software issues that it picked out.
The installation appeared to be successful except that now
when I boot the machine, it goes through the first several
portions of the boot and gets to the first Windows XP
screen. At this point the screen flickers, then goes into
a sleep mode. I have no idea whether XP continues to load
from here or not. How can I trouble shoot this???

Thanks for the reply. The computer is a desktop unit from
Gateway. A "Performance 500" machine. It came preloaded
with Win98se. The monitor is a 15" LCD monitor( Gateway
FPD 1500). I checked the latest drivers from the Gateway
website, and they don't show any updates for Win XP(or Win
2000 for that matter)... I purchased this machine in
late '99, but it cleared all the checks when I checked to
see if upgrading was feasible.

I have let the computer sit for several minutes. The hard
drive still churns(i.e. it is active), but there is no
change in the monitor status(it goes blank and the light
next to the power button changes from green to yellow)

I appreciate your time.

Hi, Ken.

I've never had a Gateway, so my comments will have to be "generic". ;^} My
LCD monitor's green light might not react the same way as yours. But there
may be a screen-saver-like power setting that blanks the screen after X
minutes of inactivity, or of no signal from the computer.

As long as the HD is still churning, there's still a chance that Setup might
still be searching for the right drivers for both your display adapter and
your monitor. Thirty minutes or more is not an unheard of length of time.
Some posters have said they went for a cup of coffee - or even left it
running overnight - and found it all done when they got back. Even if it
meets WinXP's higher qualifications, a 1999-vintage computer might take
longer to find everything than a newer model.

Perhaps someone here will recognize your Gateway and offer more specific
ideas. At least we've narrowed it down and you won't be getting tips for a
Dell or HP.
