I don't have any hair left to pull out, so I'm here for answers!

I'm trying to install XP Pro, retail version, onto a set of new
hardware. This is the original release of Pro. My hardware is a 2.8
P4 HT 800 FSB, the motherboard an Intel 865PERL, and the video card an
ATI AIW 9000.

Of course, none of this hardware is recognized by XP, so after a
seemingly uneventful intall, it boots, and doesn't recognize any of
the hardware. I knew this because I first did a proper "repair
install" of an existing installation, and saw in device manager that
the video, USB, sound, network, and something elese were "Unkown
Devices"

Thinking that I was asking the repair install to do too much, I did a
clean install, blowing away the partition, and reformatting the drive.

Now, I can't even get to device manager to see all that is wrong, as I
have a multitude of errors such as "error loading srclient.dll" on
startup, and snap-in not found errors when tyring to do a right click
on MyComputer/Manage, or clicking on the Device Manager button in
MyComputer properties.

I have seen where things like the srclient.dll/framedyn.dll error can
be easily fixed by copying a file from one subdirectory to the other
in system32, but it seems to me that there is a much larger problem
here.

What do I have to do to get this old XP install disk to work properly
with my new hardware? Is this a common problem?

Thanks for any help!

Curt,

Have you tried a BIOS update first? Maybe even doing a NVRAM reset or a
"Load Default Settings" in the BIOS. Start there and see how things work
out.

As for the types of drivers that were missing at first this can be a common
issue when all of the devices are integrated on the motherboard. You would
need the CD that came with the motherboard. In this case it may make sense
to download and install the Intel drivers for the 865 chipset on the Intel
web site. Also, the Application Accellerator wouldn't hurt either.
