I would like nuke my hard drive and install a current version of XP Pro SP2
(I have on disc) without having to log onto the update site and leave my
system wide open while I download individual updates. I know some of the
updates correct previous versions. Is there any way to find which updates I
need and the order in which to install them? I seem to have downloaded
nearly 100 since the initial installation. I would also like to do a
slipsteam installation but the articles i have read are a little vague as to
where individual update files should be located.
Thanks
Brian

You can download each update manually - based off the KB Article number,
etc. That way you can back it up/burn a CD of them in case you need them or
use them to keep a slipstream/integrated (updated) Windows XP CD.

You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given
month using the following:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms##-***.mspx

At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##
with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month
abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches
for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by
the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be
fine) - note that future months will not work.

As an example...

December 2004's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-dec.mspx

March 2005's patches..
None released.. so that one will fail...

May 2005's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-may.mspx

July 2005's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-jul.mspx

Once you get on the page with each month's list of patches.. You can go to
the related KB articles and grab the appropriate files from there.

Thank you for your reply and the information provided. I will need to do
some extensive reading before I proceed any further.

You can slipstream your CD to include SP2, and then that would catch you up
to alot of the patches. The slipstream process is a bit complicated, and
will likely take you a couple of hours to do. I suggest using a rewritable
disc a few times to make sure you get everything smoothly done. One tip
might be to pit a winnt.sif file in the i386 folder of the CD to speed up
your install. Well to actually do the install for you. I can send you one
that will erase your hard drive and do a complete reinstall with no input
from you. I use these for some customers.

As for being worried about downloading updates and being open to attack, I
wouldn't worry about that if you are behind a firewall. Even the $50 Linksys
routers are adequate for that as that stops any unrelated internet traffic
from reaching your computer. If you have DSL or a cable internet connection
without a router then you might have a small reason for alarm.
