Install to third hard drive fails

I'm trying to do a clean install of XP Home to a third hard disk which I
have just installed.
I currently have XP Home on C: a 20 GB disk.
Machine came from Gateway late '99 with 98SE OEM CD and I have since bought
the Upgrade CD which installed fine on C: a couple of years ago.
My plan is to clean install XP to a new 250GB drive connected via primary
channel of a SIIG Ultra 133 controller card. My m/c sees all of the new
drive and I have formatted and set it as one large NTFS partition using
Partition Magic 8. ( I plan to partition it further later but that, I
assume, is beside the point)
Problems arise however when I boot from the XP CD. SETUP starts normally
and, as expected, it requests that I insert the Win98SE CD to verify that I
qualify to use the Upgrade CD but when I insert the 98SE CD and press enter
it reports that there is no disk in the drive? Pressing any key at this
point results in a STOP error with a report of PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA
and I have to restart. This process repeats on subsequent attempts to
install.
I had initially planned to clone the C: drive over to the new one using
Ghost 2003 but I keep getting ABORT: 36000 General Exception Error so that
is why I went for the clean install option.
Any ideas please?
TIA
Patrick

The problem is,the 98 cd is probably from the mfg,not (microsoft retail) and
thats what its looking for.You could however, format the new hd in
xp,run,type:
diskmgmt.msc In msc R.click,format.When thru,go to run,type:
XCOPY C:\*.* D:\ /c/h/e/k/r Agree to all in the DOS window, once its
thru,youre
done cloning or mirroring the hd.Also, set as slave on same IDE chain as
C:,also,
D: being slave, but substitude diffrent letter as to its asigned with in xp.

You need a minimum of SP1 to use any HDD over 128GiB

Yes Thanks but I am already running SP2 and as I say my machine sees all of
the new 250GB drive. It's only when I come to do a clean install that my
problems arise.

Does the BIOS recognize the size of the HDD?

I doubt it if it is almost 6 years old. And making smaller (under 137 Gb)
will not help.

Yes it does as I am using the SIIG Ultra 133 ATA controller PCI card.

Yes it is Gateway OEM but that did not prevent the upgrade to XP Home a
couple of years back?

I have already NTFS-formatted it OK with PM8
xp,run,type:
diskmgmt.msc In msc R.click,format.When thru,go to run,type:
XCOPY C:\*.* D:\ /c/h/e/k/r Agree to all in the DOS window, once its

Any particular reason you suggest this as I was hoping to keep the new
drive on a seperate IDE channel because it is ATA 133 and if I make one of
the slower drives a slave on the same channel won't I slow the faster drive
down?

When you upgraded a few years back the XP Install read the HD that 98 was
installed on...now its only reading the 98 OEM CD and found it lacking.

So if I were to re-install 98SE to the new drive I could immediately
afterwards do a clean install of XP from the Upgrade CD...is that correct or
am I missing something else?
Patrick

Ok, so did you install the driver for the card? Is your BIOS set to allow
booting from SCSI? I did miss the part about the card in your OP.
