Install SP2 needs more hard disk space

I want to install service patch 2 but the relevant computer hasn't got enough
room. I don't have the latest partition magic to expand the partition, nor
do I want to reinstall the operating system. I got nothing to temporarily
eliminate. It's just a barebone system for testing.

I have mounted another partition of 10G to windows\temp directory as I
believe that is where the temporary files go. I got update error. Can
somebody tell me how to go around it?

I'm not sure if the files got to "temp" I think SP2 creates a folder in the
root of any available drive that has enough space. Generally "C:\" gets used
but I assume if there is not enough space and another drive (say "D:\") is
available it will use that.

I'm sure someone else will put me straight if that's not the case.

Try mounting the %userprofile%\local settings\temp folder for the account
being used to install SP2 as well.

Are you getting SP2 "online" at Windows Update, or by CD, or are you getting the full-file download of Sp2?
How much free space is there on your C drive ? and is there another drive with a very large amount of disk space?

You ought to have 1.8 GB of free space during the installation phase.

To increase you free space on your C select Start, All Programs,
Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System Restore and
remove all but the latest System Restore points? Restore points can be quite
large.

To move programmes use Add / Remove Programs in Start, Control Panel, Add /
Remove Programs to uninstall programmes. Create a Programs Directory on
your other partition and reinstall there.

Some other notes you may find useful.

Create a My Documents folder in another partition and copy ( not move ) the
contents of My Documents to your new folder. Then delete the files in your
My Documents folder ( if you encounter problems deleting use Shift + Delete
to bypass the Recycle Bin ). You will also need to change Default File
locations in the Microsoft Office programmes you use. For Word go to Tools,
Options, File Locations, highlight Documents, click on Modify and change
file path. For Excel go to Tools, Options, General and change default file
path.

For Temporary Internet Files select Start, Control Panel, Internet Options,
Temporary Internet Files. Settings, Move Folder.

To move the Outlook Express Store Folder select in Outlook Express Tools,
Options, Maintenance, Store Folder, Change.

I guess you're right. I've just tried again though it still failed. The
process put all temporary files in the partitiion that I have most spare
space. I have more than 6 gig empty space in that particular partition, not
the one where SP2 was meant to go though. It still failed. I really don't
know where it needs the space.

I have mounted a 5 gig partition in the local settings\temp folder and
another 5 gig partition in the windows\temp folder but it still failed. I
really don't know where it needs the space.

I have the whole file in a CD where I install from. I don't have much room in
the C drive. In fact, C drive is not visible. Perhaps It is not compatible.
The process stored temporary file in a drive where there was aboutg 6G empty
space, not the drive where the XP Pro is though.

I have done all you suggested and even compressed the whole partition but it
still failed. I have mounted 5 gig partition in windows\temp and another 5
gig partition in localsettings\temp. I tried again, then it complained it
needed another 136 megabytes space. I compressed the drive, the empty space
from 300 plus becomes 600 plus megabytes and it still failed. Where else it
needs space. It's really frustrating.

It's possible to retrieve about ~500 Megabytes of space on the XP
partition by purging the DllCache folder. From a Command Prompt
type Sfc /Purgecache
Also on "Problematic" Service Pack installs - execute from Safe Mode.

Healer,

Where (which drive) is you current Windows XP ? What is on the C drive? and why is it "not visible"?
Are you possibly hiding a partition on purpose?

You might not believe it. I have multiple operating systems (8 Windows and 1
linux) installed on one hard disk. I installed 98SE, then NT4 server, NT
workstation, Windows 2000 Advanced server, Windows 2000 Pro, Windows XP Pro,
lastly Linux Red Hat. I use this computer for testing and backup. Apart
from the Windows 2000 Pro and Red Hat Linux, all partitions have only the
operating systems installed. When I installed NT4, Windows 98 was hidden. I
supposed it was because NT4 being 16bit can't see Windows 98 being 32bit. So
both 98SE and NT4 Server are assigned C drive when they are in operation.
From Windows 2000 I can see all the drives though the drive letters are not
the actual letters as far as NT4 servers and NT workstations are concerned.
However from XP Pro which was the last Windows system I installed I can't see
Windows 98, no C drive is visible. In the process of installing XP SP2,
somehow I mucked up the grub loader and I had to remove the grub loader
before I could access any of the Windows drive. Windows XP Pro is in I:
drive.

The purging only gave me 8 meg space and the installation still failed. If
the worst comes to the worst, I will have to reinstall the operating system.
The error message says that setup requires a minimum of 98 additional
megabytes of free space or 448 megabytes if archive for uninstallation. By
the way, I don't think the installation gives the option of not archiving for
uninstallation. Am I right? I didn't see any option at all.

It (SP2) should present a "Default" uninstall location. You might try to
redo the update and re-direct the Uninstall folder to one of you other
partitions. That should "Lighten-the-Load" on disk requirements. This
should not be this difficult to achieve.

I did change the uninstall folder to (\windows\temp) where I have mounted the
5gig space, but it still failed. Somehow it did not give me the option not
to uninstall even though the error message suggested I could. I have just
tried again after receiving your reply and it still failed.
