I working on a new install of XP Home Edition and when I install new
programs they're not working. I took a look at the folder where they are
installed and it's "read only" and I can change that but when I look
again it's still "read only."

What am I doing wrong?

That is not the prob, they are read only and will stay read only.

All programs don't work....? Any error messages...? What do they do...?
What programs..?

In Windows 98SE they're not read only. Is XP different?

The program I'm trying to install in Paint Shop Pro 4.0. It installed on
2KPro and worked. It installs on XP but instead of running I get a box
to send a report. I'll look again after I reinstall. I've already
uninstalled PSP.

I tried to install a second program, AnyTime Organizer, and I noticed my
firewall ask permission for "Auto Play Menu Studio 4.0" and for "Generic
Host Process For Win32 Services" to access the internet. I select Yes
but the computer is not currently hooked up to the internet.

Do I need XP to be connected to the internet to install some programs?

Yes xp is different in this reguard.
Might do a google search to see if the programs are compatible with xp. If
the program writes directly to hardware it won't run.

If you know where the runtime .exe program is located, you can right click
it's file name or icon and select the compatibility mode to costom set up
the program. Best to go to the manufacture web site and see if they work
with xp.

It's not set read only, it's actually in an indeterminate state. If you
check that box repeatedly you'll see there are three settings, and it always
reverts to the indeterminate state. This flag has no bearing on whether the
folder is open for reading. All folders are.
