Hi, I recently had a sytem crash and had to do a repair/
reinstall, I'm using XP home, and now I can't install any
software, drivers or updates. I can download just fine but
when I try to install it either hangs at the very
beginning on some or gets about 90% through installation
on other programs and then hangs and will not complete.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Fred, try using the System File Checker. Start>Run type: sfc
/scannow Have the WinXP CD in the
cdrom drive.

Rich, thanks for replying so quickly. When I do as you
suggested I get "Windows cannot find sfc/scannow, make
sure the filename is typed correctly yada yada". Also I
only have a restore cd. Can I extract the missing sfc file
from the disk?, or do I have to perform yet another
complete re-install?

You forgot the space after the "sfc", so type in this in
your run box; sfc /scannow with that space after sfc. And
for the XP CD if and when it asks for it, just try to
borrow one from someone.

Fred, I thought you had a WinXP CD. Since I never had to use a Recovery
Disk I am not sure about this
but usually it allows you to install a fresh image of your original XP OS.
If that's the case maybe give it
another try. Ideally you should have a fresh version of the XP OS with
everything working properly after you
finish.
