Install of XP over Win98

I have several issues with current win 98, to the point of reinstalling, so plan to upgrade to Win XP. I have 2 hard disks, C for system and programs, D for data (photos, music).
Question: If I do a new install with XP, I understand I am wiping the C drive clean, but will it also require me to loose my data on D drive?

Formatting the C: drive should not affect the other.
