Install new mobo, CPU, RAM under WinXP

Howdy,

I know this is a bit cowboy, and I've done it under Win98, but wondering: is
it possible to upgrade the motherboard/CPU/RAM on a system without a
complete reinstall, or even without re-running WinXP Setup? I literally have
a system which has managed to stay intact since the original installation of
Win95, and which I have upgraded over the years (perhaps someone from MS
should come over to visit and witness this marvel <g>). I'd like to see if
I can keep that going.

Any and all advice welcome. I already know that my FAT32-converted-to-NTFS
file system on the root drive is not optimal, due to MFT fragmentation.
Some day I will find a way to start fresh, but it's never been enough of a
priority to do. Unimaginable numbers of programs, data, files, history...
too much to recreate.

Thanks,

Steve

Normally, and assuming a retail license (many OEM installations
and licenses are not transferable to a new motherboard - check yours
_before_ starting), unless the new motherboard is virtually identical
(same chipset, same IDE controllers, same BIOS version, etc.) to the
one on which the WinXP installation was originally performed, you'll
need to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation, at
the very least:

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP

As always when undertaking such a significant change, back up any
important data before starting.

This will also require re-activation, unless you have a Volume
Licensed version of WinXP Pro installed. If it's been more than 120
days since you last activated that specific Product Key, you'll most
likely be able to activate via the internet without problem. If it's
been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.
