My step son passed away in October and I would like to give his computer to
his brother. Can I install my XP Home Edition software on his computer and
run the program on his and my computer?

You need one license per computer. If you were planning on installing
Windows on both computers with the same CD Key, that's not going to work.
You'll need to purchase another key (there's a small discount for just
buying the license, but it really is quite small... you might do better just
going to a local store and buying another copy of Windows XP. The last time
I checked, the difference was about $20 USD.)

Sorry to hear about your loss.

Thank you for your help. I did not think the install could be done but wanted
to check.

No, you can't. Just as it says, right on the box, you'll need to
purchase a separate WinXP license for each computer on which you install it.

As it has *always* been with *all* Microsoft operating systems,
it's necessary (to be in compliance with both the EULA and U.S.
copyright law http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/117.html), if not
technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each computer on which it
is installed. (Consult an attorney versed in copyright law to determine
final applicability in your locale.) The only way in which WinXP
licensing differs from that of earlier versions of Windows is that
Microsoft has finally added a copy protection and anti-theft mechanism,
Product Activation, to prevent (or at least make more difficult)
multiple installations using a single license.

You can not run one licensed WINXP program on two different computers.
Microsoft sells a family license at a discount if you are interested.

There is no such thing as a "family license." One can purchase
additional WinXP licenses from Microsoft for approximately 15% off the MSRP.
