Install Failure

Hi, I have W2000 installed on C: and it has been running very happily for
years !
On a separate hard drive D: I am trying to install XP from a retail OEM Cd.
The BIOS is set to boot CD,C,A.
When I get to the re-boot on the install "press any key to boot from cd"
comes up.
This presumably I don't want to do, I have gone as far as to remove the CD
at this point.
When the PC reboots the XP screen comes up for a few seconds then nothing.
I can only think of 2 things to explain this:
A - that I am being dumber than I normally am.
B - that as the HD that XP hasn't finished installing to is D: and is not
in the BIOS boot order, the PC needs to know that D: exists.

Really grateful for any help offered
TIA
Arfer.

A - Probably not

B - Even though you're installing XP to the D: drive the boot files still get written to the C: drive.

As long as the BIOS is set to allow booting from CD, and you have the CD in the drive, you will see the Press any key....... just ignore it and it will timeout.

As for XP freezing, ensure that your motherboard supports XP. Particularly if you have a RAID or other configuration that might require drivers to be loaded manually as part of setup.

Doug thanks for the swift reply, I think I may have misled you and anyone
else reading this thread.
The CD boots fine and all goes well till the "press any key.........."
message. It does indeed time out, but nothing happens thereafter.
I have booted W2000 and looked at the D: Drive from there. It does indeed
contain what I would expect to see.
So I really am at a loss to explain why the install halts......
Thanks again for your time and please let me know if any different info
would be helpful,
Cheers Arfer.

Again, XP is doing its initial file copy, then rebooting, as it should. It should have modified BOOT.INI so that Windows XP's setup routine gets launched for the remainder of the install. Its possible that some piece of hardware in your system, or even the motherboard itself (chipset, IDE, SCSI drivers, etc.) is causing the install routine to hang. Possibly due to lack of driver support.
