hi, i had a xp home edition installed on a comp and then my hard disk
crashed. i lost everything on it. i put the same version of xp on this
computer, but how can i activate it again, seeing as my last computer crashed
beyond repair?

Just click on the activate option in the Start menu. You shouldn't have any
trouble activating again.

its a different hard drive, one from a different computer, so the settings
will be different, wont they?

If it's been more than 120 days since you activated the OS on your old
computer, MS won't find it. In the unlikely event that you do have
trouble, just call the phone number and explain.

The one hitch is if you're using an OEM version of the system. Those
are licensed only to the first computer they're installed on, and
cannot be transferred to another even if the first ceases to exist
(that's one reason they're so cheap).

That doesn't matter. Just do your install and activate Windows.

drive or not?

With an OEM license: Different hard drive, yes. Different computer, no.

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not legitimately
transferable), simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on
and then install it on the new computer. If it's been more than 120
days since you last activated that specific Product Key, the you'll most
likely be able to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's
been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

What's ridiculous is your having purchased an OEM license at a
significantly reduced price, and then expecting it to have the same
features, such as transferability, as a retail version. You paid less,
you got less. That's the way it works in the real world.

Go ahead and try Linux. Given your mastery of grade-school level
spelling and grammar, it should be a snap.

bought. i didn't know what it was so i asked people who i thought would know.
is that such a problem?

in respect to my spelling in grammer, apparently you havent seen people talk
on AIM very much, or you would have understood every word i said.

Don't look now, but this ain't "AIM" (fortunately). You want help from
the people here, play by the rules here. YOUR choice.

funny how this is the only group that care about spelling and grammer...ive
posted tons in the VB and C++ newsgroup and none of them seem to care....my
appologies to anyone that was offended or anything by how i typed

This isn't AIM (fortunately). If you want to communicate with people here,
write in standard English. If you don't, you run the risk that most of us
will lose patience with you and simply ignore your messages.

On the contrary, I've seen lots of groups which do. Can't speak for
the ones you mention. Many people, myself included, dislike "AOL
Talk".
