I attempted to install windows xp service pack 2 from the downloaded 266
mb file. All went well until the dialog box ran for 45 minutes
inspecting my current configuration. With no end in sight,I canceled the
installation. Is 45+ minutes normal, expected or acceptable for
inspecting my current configuration, or is something wrong here?

Seems overly long to me. Most of my SP2 installs have been ~30 minutes. You
aren't multi-tasking during setup are you? Also, try disabling your
antivirus software. The key is whether or not the installation is
progressing, or the system stops for a long period (no drive chatter).

Thanks for the advice. Although the (Norton) antivirus definitely
needs to be turned off during install (it slows it down A LOT), the main
problem seemed to be that the C-drive *seriously* needed defragging.
After defragging, it went in much quicker.

Good, glad you got it sorted. And yes, I've noted the problems with Norton's
software is very common.
