Inserting figure legend

Hi,

I want to insert and update automatically figure and table
legends. I know how to do this, but I do not know how to
tell Word that the first legend should be Fig. 5 and not
Fig. 1 (because fig. 1 is already on the preceeding chapter
which is saved on another document).

Word manages numbering in captions (I think that's what you
mean by "legends") using SEQ fields. If you click in the
first caption in a sequence, then press Shift+F9 you should
see the SEQ field code that maintains the numbering. At
the end of the field, type the following switch to tell it to
Restart at a particular number (5): \r 5

To find out more about the possibilities of the SEQ field
codes, do a search in Word's Help on SEQ field.
