Inserting Excel file into Word

Hello,
I'm trying to insert an Excel file into a word document. Currently when I do it via the Insert>File function, what is inserted is non legible characters. How do I add the excel file as an attachment that a user can click on to open and view the excel file?
 
The "insert" button on the final window (where you are selecting the file
you wish to insert) should have a drop-down arrow. If instead of clicking
the button itself, and thereby inserting the file contents, you click the
drop-down, you should see an alternative selection to "Insert as Link."

Hi,
When I do that, I get another box that pops up and asks me if I want to insert as plain text, encoded text, HTML, and a slew of other options. I tried plain text and got the non-legible characters again. ah! I'm suffering a bad case of user error here, I'm sure.

Hi Dennis. Assuming you have Word 2000 or later, there are at least two ways I can think of to do what you want, depending on how you want the results to appear in the Word file.

Method 1. In Excel, select the area in the spreadsheet that you want to appear in the Word file. Click on Edit | Copy. Switch to Word. Click on Edit | Paste Special | Excel object. With this method, there is a limit to how many columns/rows you can display in the spreadsheet image pasted into Word. Word will truncate the image if you select too many, but if the you double-click the spreadsheet image in Word, the entire Excel spreadsheet will be accessible.

Method 2. In Word, click on Insert | Object | Create from file | <enter filename> | check the "Display as icon" box. This method pastes an Excel icon into the Word document. When the icon is double-clicked, the entire Excel spreadsheet will be accessible.
