I tried to insert an xls file to word using ver 97. After I do an insert
picture or insert file, the output on the word couldn't show all the
columns. How can I show all the columns from xls into word? Thanks.

Hi,

Inserting Excel Files into Word Documents
1. Place the insertion point (cursor) where you want to insert your Excel
file
2. From the Standard Toolbar click on the Excel icon
(called Insert Microsoft Excel Worksheet)
3. Select the size of the Excel worksheet you want to insert and click once
with the mouse
4. A blank Excel worksheet appears
start typing information into the blank worksheet
or
copy information from a pre-existing Excel file and paste the information
into your blank worksheet within
the Word document
5. To preview what the Excel worksheet will look like in Word:
Click somewhere in the Word document, away from your Excel worksheet
To return to editing your Excel worksheet, double-click on the Excel
worksheet
6. To resize the Excel worksheet:
To expand the number of columns and/or rows in the worksheet:
Select the worksheet by clicking on it once (8 handles appear around the
edge)
Use your mouse to grab a corner handle and drag it to the desired size
To add only columns, grab a handle on a vertical edge and drag out
To add only rows, grab the bottom center handle and drag downward
7. To enlarge the image of the worksheet (without increasing the number of
columns and/or rows):
Resize the worksheet proportionately by grabbing a corner handle and
dragging
If you grab a side handle, you will stretch your image either
horizontally or vertically
8. To edit the Excel worksheet as an IMAGE:
Select the worksheet by clicking on it once (the handles appear)
Edit as you would any other Word image
(see handout Inserting Pictures Into Word Documents)
ex: to center your Excel image, select it, then click the center icon on
the Formatting Toolbar

I can't fit all the columns into the doc. What if I just want to make an
external link?

You can copy the Excel range and paste it into Word as a picture (this
is not the same as Insert Picture or Insert File), and the picture can
be resized as you wish. In Excel, select the range of cells you want to
paste into Word, and click on Edit -> Copy (or Ctrl+C). Switch to Word.
Click on Edit -> Paste Special -> Paste as Picture, uncheck the "Float
Over Text" box if you wish, and OK. If you turned off float, the Excel
picture will automatically resize to fit within the left/right or
top/bottom margins (whichever is more restrictive), although you can
further resize the picture if you wish. If left float on, the picture
as pasted into Word will probably be too big, but you can resize it as
you wish. Floating or not, you will not be able to edit the Excel
picture in place in the Word file (i.e., change the data in the
picture)... if you need to change the data, you will have to do that in
Excel, then copy and paste the range into Word again. The advantages
are that other people won't be able to change the data in the picture
either, and the size of your Word file will be smaller because you're
not embedding the entire Excel worksheet in it as you would if you used
Insert File or Insert Object. There is a limit to how much you can copy
from Excel though. Word can't shrink the selected range to less than
59% of its original size in Excel to fit within Word's margins... if you
select too many rows or columns, Word will shrink the selected range to
59% and truncate everything at the right and/or bottom side(s) of the
picture that doesn't fit within the margins. So check to make sure
everything you copy in Excel shows up in Word. Hope this helps.

Hi,

Inserting the link for Excel file is quiet easy. once you click on the
link it takes you to the excel file.
Create customized hyperlinks to one of the following:

An existing or new document, file, or Web page

1.) Select the text or picture you want to display as the hyperlink, and
then click Insert Hyperlink on the Standard toolbar (toolbar: A bar with
buttons and options that you use to carry out commands. To display a
toolbar, click Customize on the Tools menu, and then click the Toolbars
tab.).

Link to an existing file or Web page-Under Link to, click Existing File or
Web Page.

In the Address box, type the address you want to link to or, in the Look in
box, click the down arrow, and navigate to and select the file.
Link to a file you haven't created yet-Under Link to, click Create New
Document.

In the Name of new document box, type the name of the new file.
Under When to edit, click either Edit the new document later or Edit the
new document now.
Note To assign a ScreenTip (ScreenTips: Notes that appear on the screen to
provide information about a toolbar button, tracked change, or comment, or
to display a footnote or endnote. ScreenTips also display the text that
will appear if you choose to insert a date or AutoText entry.) that
displays when you rest the mouse over the hyperlink, click ScreenTip, and
then type the text you want. Word uses the path or address of the file as
the tip if you do not specify one.

If you are working with frames pages (frames page: A Web page that divides
a Web browser window into different scrollable areas that can independently
display several Web pages. One window can remain unchanged, while the other
windows change based on hyperlinks that the user selects.), specify which
frame will display the destination of the hyperlink.

In the Insert Hyperlink dialog box, click Target Frame.
In the Set Target Frame dialog box, under Current frames page, click the
frame in the diagram where you want the destination of the hyperlink to
appear.
