Insert TIFF graphic support?

I'm trying to insert a picture that is in TIF format. On
Frontpage 2002 I had no problem and it was converted to
GIF when I save the page, however with FrontPage 2003 TIF
doesn't even show up as a support file format in the File
Type drop down menu when instering a picture.
Draggin'Drop or Cut & Pasting the TIF results in a small
box with an x through it.

Anyone else have this problem? A TIF graphic file filter
doesn't show up as a custom install option.

Why not use a true graphic application to convert the file, as you will have
more control over the quality of the final image, etc.?

Do a search for IrfanView - a fast, small freeware graphics utility that
will convert between most formats with options like quality vs.
compression or transparency...

You can also assign your image editor for .tif files in FP using Tools Option Configure Editors
- but remember .tif files are usually huge and not supported by many browsers

Agree w/ Thomas convert them to .jpg or .gif in your image editor before you File Import them in FP

I can convert the files easily enough with Microsoft
Office Picture Manager and am satisfied with the
results. I was just hoping to avoid this extra step
since I never had to do it with previous version of
FrontPage. Microsofts 1100 page Complete FrontPage book
says that it can insert TIF files. Have you folks been
able to do it?

Thanks
Ken

You can, but the problem is that tiff files
are huge in comparison to the same image saved
as a gif or jpg and take *forever* to display in a browser.

That's why everyone is recommending using an editor
and changing the format.

As an example I download a tif from NASA / JPL last evening
( a Mars image ) it was a 38 megabyte download. Took 10 minutes
on a DSL line. The image was only 3000 by 3000 pixels in size.
( roughly 3 1/2 times a normal screen size.

I guess I'm not being clear. I don't want to save the tif file to my web page. I just want to be able to insert it into my frontpage web as a picture AND THEN save the page - at the same time converting the tif image to gif. I used to be able to do this in previous versions but FrontPage 2003 and Win XP is now forcing me to convert the tiff file to gif IN A SEPARATE PROGRAM BEFORE I INSERT IT INTO FRONTPAGE. I'm trying to see if it's possible to avoid this extra step. When you insert a tif file into FrontPage 2003 does it appear?

Thanks
Ken

Ken,

I just gave this a try and you're right, it won't import the TIF into the
website nor will it automatically convert it.

Interestingly, even though the path was correct, IE 6 wouldn't display the
file either.

I'm guessing that they pulled built-in support for TIFs to keep new users
from using an inappropriate file type on the web.

I realize you're probably tired of hearing it by now, but in general,
relying on FrontPage to do your image manipulation is a bad idea. It's just
isn't very good at the task. My guess is you've been pleased with the
output and will probably miss the capability that you used to have. The
only thing I can suggest is to consider using the free IrfanView utility:
www.irfanview.com.

This program is very fast and can be used to batch convert multiple files at
the same time. It can even crop or resize, but those options are a little
too fancy to trust to a batch process, at least in my opinion. But by being
able to process multiple files at once, it shouldn't be too much a bump in
your workflow and you may be pleasantly surprised with the results.

Good luck!

Jack,

Thanks for confirming the loss of tif support in
FrontPage 2003. The tif files I am working with are less
than 300KB images of sheet music so the results were fine
for B&W online previews. I'll take a look at the
Irfanview though. Is it worth installing if I already
have Microsoft Office Picture Manager install (which does
a satisfactory file conversion from tif to gif for me)?

Thanks for your help.
Ken

Ken,

I don't use Picture Manager, but after taking a quick glance at it, I
don't think Irfanview will give you any needed features over and above.

But you've already got a work flow down so I'd say stick with what you
know. I'll stick with IrfanView for the same reason. :)
