That's quite a pain when you are trying to coordinate a standard among users
to make it easier on the Exchange Server and to avoid them
sending/forwarding emails with huge attachments within the organization.
Did it get removed with 2003? I can't see most 'normal' users even trying
to attempt putting in a link to a file. Why didn't MS call me to ask what I
thought!
You know, if they would ask the techs that have to support it instead of
making these crazy global decisions that help no one, they could really have
some great programs. Examples:
1. Better mail merge from Outlook
2. Why would they get rid of Public Folders cold turkey in Exchange 2007?
Do you know how hard that is going to be to transition these folders?
3. Need limited ability to share certain folders in peer-to-peer
non-Exchange environments (yes, I know there are add-ins, but they really
don't function like you would like them for simple folder sharing or group
folders).
4. Figure out a better way to talk with other PDA's like Palm (ever have
someone crash a Palm, reset it and then they forget to tell Outlook to
overwrite and you add 500 duplicates to the contacts folder because Palm
doesn't recognize middle name and prefix/suffix fields in Outlook, so
Outlook says "welcome new contact, you look familiar, but not quite, so
let's add you to our list").
5. Convert ost files to pst and vice versa for restore or creation of
mailboxes.
6. Let Unicode pst's in 2003 talk to older versions of Outlook.
I could go on for days (was that not enough already?). I am a Small
Business Partner and it just gets harder every time there is an update.
Thanks for the help!!

I have tried to show someone how to insert a file as a link, but
can't get that option to show on their version of Outlook (2003 with
all SP's). I have tried changing mail format to use Word as editor
or just HTML and neither seems to work. What am I missing to have
this option available?
Thanks!
I don't think you're missing anything - I think it's that Outlook is now
missing something. Annoying, isn't it?
Try using insert | hyperlink, change the type to file: and specify the
path...
file://servername/sharename/filename.ext
