A friend has a two person home office. At times the receptionist can not
use the phone system to give a message to her employer. We are looking for
a program that will post a message onto his desktop. Both computers are
running Windows 98.

May I suggest "Tonic" at http://www.r2.com.au -- very clean interface,
much like a standard IM client. I am not a company employee; rather, I
am a happy user that has had this program on his home network for
nearly half-a-decade.

I'll second that. It's the greatest. Works on XP as well.
I also use it as a pop-up reminder for when its morning tea and
lunchtime, when it's time to attach the backup hard-drive, and when
it's the last day of our DSL month (time for hard out downloading).
