Initializing the root folders to display.

When I click on the drop down list for MyComputer and the hard drives in the
system (in Word, Outlook, Frontpage, etc..), I get a message:
"Initializing the root folders to display" and then the application (any)
will hang. It seems that the folder display module in windows is corrupt.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Hi,

This happens when you have has a disconnected network drive. Open their "My
Computer" and look for any disconnected network drive letters, if you find
some
either right click and disconnect them or connect them.

Hope that helps,

Stop using those paper phone message pads
make the computer work for you.

You are quite right!!! This issue has been plaguing my system for quite
sometime and I started to suspect something was amiss with my brain.
On Office 2003, one does not get any message at all. The system simply hangs
and the filesystem goes haywire thereafter. With Office 2007, the
"Initializing" message appears and then not even Windows Explorer works
right. At least it goes one step beyond and allowed me to report the error to
the newsgroup.

I have about 10 different network drives that at some time or another do go
down. That means that my system is at the mercy of vagaries of other systems!
Ouch!!! Boy, that really takes the glamour out of peer-to-peer networking.

Thanx a lot.

Thank you SO MUCH! You just fixed my problem as well. I was getting ready
to rebuild my computer, as it was getting too frustrating.
